Tim and Casey’s Matte Black Bathroom

When clients Tim and Casey made the move from Melbourne back to Adelaide and purchased their bluestone villa in the seaside suburb of Glenelg North, they had grand plans to make these former doctors rooms into their first family home. First on the list was to create a relaxing retreat for their master suite, so enlisted interior designer and stylist Katrina Kluzek of Colindale Design to help achieve it.

The brief was to be light, bright and luxe without being overly formal and to achieve an ensuite space of a suitable scale to complement the spacious master bedroom. Consideration was also given to the colour scheme for the rest of the house and the vision for a new extension that was in the pipeline for the rear of the property. Maintaining the character and integrity of the home was important, yet they also wanted it to represent their laidback personalities.

Situated at the front of the house, the ensuite exists amongst original features such as high ceilings, detailed cornices and ornate fireplaces.  For this reason, the subway tile was chosen specifically for its undulated finish. Its surface bounces lovely light across the walls and its unique handmade quality make this tile befitting of such a villa. Round mirrors were recommended to enhance the effects and rectilinear shape of the subway tile.

The 600 x 600 floor tile format was chosen to ensure minimal grout lines and the movement within the tile, which gives it a natural stone appearance. The matte finish is easy to maintain, making it perfect for a beach location (no one likes to fret about sand on their tiles!)

The niche shelving for storage runs the whole length of the back wall, which the clients love.

The matte black tapware, black mirrors and feature lighting all give a nod to the contemporary without being in opposition with the historical aspects of the gorgeous bluestone villa.
