The Vitreous Enameling Process (Porcelain) permanently bonds to cast iron, which is a special type of GLASS and is fired at a high Temperature, approximately 850C. There will always be a degree of ripple effect on the enamel surface, the main two reasons for this is, the condition of the cast iron and the fact that the glass has to melt and then flow into position, remembering these are hand crafted.
There will always be a degree of Ripple or dimpling effect on the enamel surface and miniscule black specking the main two reasons for this, are the condition of the cast iron and the fact that the glass has to melt and then flow into position, remembering these are hand crafted. Pinholes or brownish marks in the enamel surface, these should be kept to a minimum, they are impossible to totally eliminate, due to the structure of the cast iron itself and Antique Baths have at the factory & in the showroom examples of pinholes in old Vitreous enamel products. I have seen no evidence that they are Detrimental to the life of the product, as they only appear in the final cover coat. If pinholes do appear in final coat, Antique Baths Sydney may put a porcelain repair in these pinholes. (Porcelain repair may discolour with age) as pinholes are a visual issue only.
Pre-process surface cleaning will be carried out by Antique Baths normally, annealing and shot blasting on the castings. , if Pinholes do occur they can be touched up with Porcelain Repair.
Hand crafted baths, whether old or new, can have indentations or such. These are not detrimental to the use of the bath and if at any stage these indentations appear after final vitreous enamel coat, a filler can be applied to that area if necessary. When Antique Baths reach the stage of filling and painting the exterior of the bath, as the bath is vitreous enameled interior, it is masked up, for protection. The bath is filled with filler, sanded and made smooth, then primed and painted to client’s choice of colour. When the bath is primed and painted, the bath is on a two bar trolley, so where the bath rests on the bars, there will be very little paint covering the cast iron. Over the 22 years of business we have never found this a issue of rusting or oxidizing.
